International Basketball Federation (FIBA): Remove the ban on Headscarves/Hijab
Hi everyone! My name is Kike Salihu Rafiu and am from Nigeria. I recently just graduated from Georgetown University (Go Hoyas!) where I played basketball on the women's team. Although my collegiate career didn't go as planned but I give thanks to Allah (God). During my second year in college, I decided to start covering while practicing/playing. In order to make this a reality, I had to go through paperwork with NCAA which turned out fruitful. NCAA allows headscarves (but not the full HIJAB), FIBA does not allow any type of covering. So girls/women wearing headscarve/hijab who want to participate in FIBA competitions are denied their right to play the game they love and are passionate about because of the ban on headscarves/hijab by FIBA.
There is absolutely no reason such law should be in existence. I played in college with my headscarve on and nobody was ever hurt! This law is discriminatory and is denying us (hijabis) our fundamental human right to partake in a sport we love. I am calling on you all to please sign this petition so that FIBA shut down the ban on head covering. Together we can shut down this DISCRIMINATORY law. Every signatures counts!
