FEEL PINK - IMPROVE POST-NATAL MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT

FEEL PINK - IMPROVE POST-NATAL MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT
The Issue
After the birth of my first child, I spiraled into post-natal depression. The support systems already available did not catch me when I fell. I fought to get well, but the system FAILED. I was scrutinized and left afraid of the systems currently in place. Since having my second child recently, I have realized there are so many things lacking in the system. We already know women's health is overlooked, let's make a change.
Our children matter, parents matter too. Before the statistics and steps towards active change, remember this first:
Flamingos temporarily "lose their pink" while raising their chicks, often turning a pale pink or white. This occurs because adult flamingos transfer their energy and nutrients—specifically carotenoid pigments—to their offspring, leaving the parents faded during this intense, high-demand, and energy-draining period.
It's okay for our colour to fade, but what if we don't have to lose our colour? LET'S FEEL PINK.
Post-natal mental health issues affect more than 1 in 5 women and 1 in 10 men, according to the National Health Service (NHS). Despite these alarming numbers, accessing effective and confidential mental health support remains a significant challenge for many new parents. The existing structures are not only insufficient and not wide-scale enough, but oftentimes create fear and embarrassment for those in need of help.
The stigma attached to post-natal mental health issues results in silence, allowing countless families to suffer unnecessarily. It is crucial for health systems to remove the barriers that prevent open discussion and assistance. Improved training for healthcare professionals can ensure they identify and support affected parents without the judgment that deters them from seeking help.
Additionally, we ask for increased funding for mental health services that are specifically tailored to new parents. Easily accessible online counseling and support groups, both virtual and face-to-face, should be available nationwide. These services need to be confidential and judgment-free.
Together, we can make a difference and foster a healthier environment for all families. By signing this petition, you are advocating for enhanced mental health support for new parents, urging policymakers and health institutions to prioritize this critical issue. You are lending your voice to a cause that seeks to eliminate the scrutiny associated with post-natal mental health and create a supportive, empathetic, and effective system that truly helps those in need.
Please sign the petition to improve post-natal mental health support and make it accessible and confidential for all mothers and fathers. LET'S FEEL PINK.
