FedEx is taking advantage of it's workforce

The Issue

FedEx's Contractor Model is Exploiting Small Businesses and Their Employees

FedEx's contractor model outsources delivery services to independent contractors, often small business owners or individuals running their own delivery operations. While marketed as a pathway to entrepreneurship, this model places an unfair burden on small businesses and their employees. Contractors face high operational costs, strict performance metrics, and limited negotiating power, while FedEx retains significant control without offering the benefits of traditional employment. The employees hired by these contractors often receive little to no benefits, such as health insurance, paid time off, or retirement plans, leaving them vulnerable. Additionally, the pay contractors can offer their drivers is significantly lower than what UPS drivers earn for performing the same work, creating a stark disparity in compensation for equivalent roles.

Small businesses and their employees face:

  • High Costs for Contractors: Contractors must purchase or lease vehicles, cover fuel, maintenance, and insurance, often with minimal financial support from FedEx.
  • Unfair Contracts: Terms heavily favor FedEx, leaving contractors with little room to negotiate or protect their interests.
  • Excessive Oversight: Contractors are micromanaged through strict delivery schedules and performance metrics, undermining their independence.
  • Low Pay and No Benefits for Employees: Contractors, squeezed by low per-package rates, can only offer their drivers wages far below those of UPS drivers, who earn competitive salaries with benefits like health insurance and pensions. Contractor employees often receive no such benefits, despite performing identical delivery tasks.
  • Profit Squeeze: Low rates and rising expenses make it difficult for contractors to sustain their businesses or provide fair wages and benefits to their employees.

This model allows FedEx to maximize profits by shifting risks and costs onto small businesses and their workers, many of whom struggle to make ends meet. It’s time to hold FedEx accountable for exploiting both contractors and their employees while creating an unfair playing field compared to competitors like UPS.

Our Demands
We call on FedEx to:

  1. Revise the Contractor Model: Ensure fair compensation, transparent contracts, and reasonable performance expectations that allow small businesses to thrive and pay competitive wages.
  2. Provide Financial Support: Offer subsidies or cost-sharing programs for vehicles, fuel, and insurance to reduce the financial burden on contractors, enabling them to offer better pay and benefits.
  3. Ensure Employee Benefits: Require contractors to provide basic benefits, such as health insurance and paid time off, to their employees, or establish a fund to support these benefits.
  4. Increase Transparency: Disclose contract terms, payment structures, and performance metrics publicly to ensure fairness and accountability.
  5. Strengthen Contractor Rights: Grant contractors greater autonomy and bargaining power to negotiate terms that protect their businesses and employees.

Why This Matters
Small businesses are vital to our economy, and their employees deserve fair treatment. FedEx’s contractor model not only undermines small business owners but also leaves their workers with substandard pay and little to no benefits compared to UPS drivers doing the same work. By signing this petition, you’re standing up for fair treatment of small business owners and their employees, demanding a system that supports rather than exploits their hard work. Together, we can pressure FedEx to reform its practices and create a more equitable partnership for contractors and their workers.
