Petition updateWe Won't Leave Anyone In Our Community Behind During COVID-19 PandemicThe Deadly Price of Not Being Able to Access Domestic Violence Services for Temporary Visa Holders

Jun 1, 2020

Recently we learnt of Kamaljeet Sidhu’s death at the hands of her husband in Quakers Hill, Sydney. Ms. Sidhu was an international student who could not avail of many of the services offered to women experiencing domestic violence, who are citizens or permanent residents. Domestic violence advocacy groups have been calling on authorities to allow temporary migrants more support as they have become more vulnerable during the pandemic. Domestic violence victims seeking urgent assistance have increased over 10% during COVID-19. This rise has been put down to the pressures people are under with restrictions of having to stay home and the extra financial hardship occuring. Now more than ever, we need to make sure everyone in Australia is safe no matter what their circumstances are and that they can access help. Ms Sidhu should have been able to access domestic violence services. Let’s keep sharing this petition with our friends and families to make sure no one else gets left behind.

As a society, we cannot allow this to keep happening.
