The extinction of any Threatened species is a choice.

The destruction of precious eco-systems and habitats is a choice.

These choices are made through the decisions and actions of politicians at all levels of Government.
And at times, by we as individuals.

Threatened Species Day marks the date that the last known living Thylacine, the Tasmanian Tiger, took its final breath. This unique species then slipped into extinction.

September 7th, 1936

Just like that, it was gone.

This day is a stark reminder that we humans are responsible for what has gone and, that gone is forever.
Threatened Species Day is also a day to acknowledge and celebrate Australia's incredibly unique and diverse native Flora and Fauna species. Many of which are admired and revered throughout the world.

However, imagine a world without Koalas.

Experts fear that they will be GONE by 2050, and if so, we will then be able to shamefully commemorate a day that we let another wonderful species simply disappear.

But it's not just our Koalas that are under threat.

In our Somerset region alone, it's our Brush-tailed Rock Wallabies, Glossy Black-Cockatoos, Greater Gliders, Powerful Owls and the Grey-headed Flying Fox.
And these are just some of our known Threatened species.
Many of our local Flora species are also under threat.

Yes, extinction is a choice.
A choice most often made by our leaders.

Wildlife and Environment are a crucial part of any Community.
Unfortunately though, what is seen as progress, is given precedence over our native Flora and Fauna, because they have no voice.

Their representation is too often missing.

At a local level, much was said in the lead up to our March Council election about representation for the Environment in the Somerset Region.

At 6 months in, our Councillors have wasted no time traversing our beautiful countryside, yet we hear little to no talk of what must be done to protect our Wildlife and Environment.

However, plans for the Mount Glen Rock Adventure Park do remain in progress.

Threatened Species Day offers time to consider what needs to change and how we can each affect that change to prevent further species from becoming Threatened or Extinct.

As Australians, are we happy for our reputation as the world's number one leader in mammal extinction to further expand?

Every choice, every decision, has an effect.

On this National Threatened Species Day, let's hope those who make the decisions that impact the natural environment of our native Flora and Fauna, commit to making a more conscious and selfless choice.

Please lend your voice for our voiceless, before another treasured species slips into the oblivion of Extinction.

And remember...
Extinction is a Choice.
Gone is Gone.
Gone is Forever.

Please share our message.
