Care4esK members are continuing to monitor Koalas on the Mount Glen Rock land parcels and adjacent Sandy Creek area, as a voluntary community service.
With Koalas being a Nationally listed Endangered species and having previously been told that Somerset Regional Council neither has the money nor the resources to undertake this valuable activity, Council are aware of the continued monitoring by Care4esK members and are updated on the dwindling population here.
We assume that Council regards this to be an important ongoing exercise and a valued contribution from the community.
On the 25th of September, an unwell Koala (pictured) was noticed in the Mount Glen Rock area during a Sunday morning walk.
Our local dedicated Wildlife Carer was unavailable, so kind Carers from Wildlife Rescue, Rehabilitation and Education Association Inc. attended the scene. With assistance from two Care4esK members, the female Koala, Honey, was successfully rescued.
The following day, she was transferred to a recognised Wildlife Hospital.
Below is the brief Hospital report, stating the very sad outcome.
Honey
Weight: 6.4kg
Body Condition Score: 6-8 (out of 10)
Age: 11+
Notes: Cloacal prolapse, bilateral ovarian cyst, conjunctivitis to the Left eye.
Euthanised due to age and medical problems. Chlamydia present
Whilst disease, vehicle strikes, and habitat loss from increasing development for recreation, industry, and infrastructure, continue to impact the future of our beloved Koalas, Care4esK and associated advocates across the globe, will continue to lobby for the changes necessary to ensure this Endangered species' protection and survival.
At a local level, we aim to address the situation wherever possible.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those within our country, locally and nationally, along with everyone throughout the world, who continue to raise greater awareness, offer dedicated care, support, and expertise, adding their voices and actions to save and protect our iconic Endangered Koala, our growing number of Threatened species, and the precious habitats that our native wildlife call home.
Together we can create the much-needed change to prevent the further unnecessary loss of native Fauna and Flora.
Care4esK members from our small regional town of Esk, wholeheartedly THANK YOU.
We greatly appreciate your continued support.
