Introduce Strict Laws to protect Flight Attendants from Passenger Assaults

The Issue

Over the last few years, Flight Attendants in the US have become a target of consistent Physical and Verbal Assaults. In the latest incident, a flight attendant suffered facial fractures after a passenger punched her twice in the face. These assaults don't just cause physical and psychological harm to the flight attendants, it also jeopardizes safety of the whole flight. The situation has gotten to the point that Flight Attendants are having to prepare themselves as if they're going out to a war, getting all sorts of self-defense training. What kind of a society are we living in?

I'm a passenger, and it is painful to watch such incidents unfold against the Flight Attendants who try their best to make air travel a safe and pleasant experience, try to accommodate all sorts of passenger demands and idiosyncrasies, and did not shy away from giving up their life for the safety of their flights on many occasions. We cannot turn a blind eye to all this thinking these are isolated incidents. These are the incidents that make the news, there are many more which don't.

This type of behavior must stop, it can only be stopped if there is a very strong deterrent and legal consequences for anyone who chooses to act this way. Attacking flight attendants cannot be the new normal, so we appeal to the FAA, and the lawmakers to introduce strict laws including but not limited to the following:

  1. A Federal no-fly list should be maintained and shared by all airlines for any type of Assault.
  2. Mandatory Fine starting at least $50,000 for Physical Assaults.
  3. Mandatory Prison Sentence for Physical Assaults.
  4. A Federal Felony Charge for Physical Assaults.
