The Australian Government needs to strengthen not reduce federal environmental legislation
The Australian Government needs to strengthen not reduce federal environmental legislation
The issue
Federal Attorney General George Brandis has announced that national environmental legislation will be amended to stop green groups seeking judicial review of environmental approvals.
The claim is that this change is necessary to protect Australian jobs from 'radical activists' who bring 'vigilante litigation' against the government. We as the community need to question this as the 'claims' about jobs were actually dis-proven through the courts. Further, Australia has the worst rate of extinction of our biodiversity through the developed world and although two species were the crux of the winning the court case; other potential issues include loss of good quality farming land and potential contamination and diversion of water will impact on rural communities.
Although climate change is not mentioned in this case; world governments are agreeing to moving to cleaner sources of energy and the price of thermal coal is plummeting rapidly.
We urge you Federal Attorney General George Brandis to listen to the people that voted this government in, that this is not in the interest of a good government to amend this legislation.
