The issue

As members of the queer community, we have fond memories of Feast Festival events - events that have helped us connect with and celebrate our community and feel safe and supported to be ourselves. Feast plays an important role in supporting the local LGBTIQ+ community and this is something we're grateful for. This November however, Feast included an event hosted at the venue ‘Go Go Lady Boy’ in their program. This venue is damaging to our trans community, especially trans people of colour. Go Go Lady Boy appropriates Thai culture, perpetuating racist stereotypes and uses racism in their online marketing, for example with the hashtag '#loveyoulongtime’. Many members of the local LGBTIQ community shared their concern and hurt with the venue ‘Go Go Lady Boy’ in March 2015 when the name was first announced. At this time, the club owners did not attempt to change the name or make amends, and actively dismissed complaints. They still fail to acknowledge the stigma caused by their venue name. Since then, the Feast Festival chose to feature the event ‘Go Go Pop’ at ‘Go Go Lady Boy’ in their 2015 Feast Festival program. This affiliation sends a strong message that Feast endorses the venue. Since Feast’s announcement of an event at ‘Go Go Lady Boy’, a group of LGBTIQ people met multiple times with Feast representatives to discuss their concerns with this decision. Feast representatives stated that financial and legal constraints prevented event relocation but the event host, DJ Josh, made further efforts to address problems, which was much appreciated. As yet however, Feast has not shown any interest in publicly revoking its association with 'Go Go Lady Boy' or publicly apologising to members of the local LGBTIQ+ community for its involvement with this venue. These actions are important. They show trans and queer people of colour that they are valued. They also send a strong message that the LGBTIQ+ community doesn’t excuse or support racist tropes or transmisogynist slurs. Feast needs to represent the LGBTIQ+ community it claims to celebrate. Feast is capable of being more inclusive and considerate. Feast must also be held accountable for mistakes made. For this reason, we are submitting this petition to Feast. Please join us to encourage Feast to do the right thing and publicly apologise and visibly disassociate itself from its involvement with ‘Go Go Lady Boy.
