The Issue

As a concerned parent in the Tallyn Ridge community of Frederick, Maryland, I feel compelled to speak out against the current ES41 Redistricting Study proposal. This sudden change, moving our children from Oakdale Middle School (OMS) to Thomas Johnson Middle School (TJMS), is more than a mere inconvenience—it deeply impacts the well-being and future of our kids.

The decision appears hasty and lacks a proper scientific foundation. It disrupts the educational continuity for our children, severing them from established peer networks and familiar educational environments at a crucial developmental stage. This is not in alignment with the community-centric approach that Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) should embody.

The goals of the redistricting study should be to enhance educational access and equity. However, the current plan only serves to create new issues related to capacity and equity. Parents in Tallyn Ridge have voiced that their concerns are about more than logistics; it's about the impact on their children's quality of education and mental health.

Furthermore, the plan seems to overlook the available capacity at Oakdale Middle School, which contradicts the rationale of moving students to resolve so-called overcrowding. Additionally, the transition to TJMS could lead to adjustment challenges affecting students’ academic performance and emotional well-being.

It's imperative that the FCPS Board of Education reassesses this proposal with a community-first mindset. Alternatives must be explored that allow our children to retain their current educational path at OMS, aligning any changes with evidence-based decision-making processes.

We're calling on the FCPS Board to conduct further community consultations and engage with educational experts to explore the broader impacts of this redistricting move. Let's work together for solutions that don't undermine the foundations of our children's educational journey.

Please lend your voice to this cause and urge the FCPS Board to reconsider the ES41 Redistricting proposal by signing this petition. Your support can help ensure a brighter, healthier educational future for our community's children.
