The Issue

Last week, I experienced a heart-wrenching situation that I wish to spare others from. While heading to my cousin's funeral, I was held up at Wayne Gretzky Street for over five minutes just trying to cross the road. It was a day when I should have been where my family needed me the most, yet the unfriendly pedestrian signals added unnecessary stress to an already emotional day.

Wayne Gretzky Street is a bustling area in our community, and its current traffic light setup simply doesn't prioritize pedestrians. Too often, we find ourselves waiting for long intervals, watching as cars continuously pass by while pedestrians stand idly. This inefficient system not only causes delays, as it did for me, but also puts pedestrians at risk, as some may choose to jaywalk out of frustration, endangering themselves.

According to the World Health Organization, pedestrian-friendly infrastructure can significantly reduce road accidents and improve urban living standards. Cities that prioritize pedestrian access and safety contribute to a more environmentally sustainable society, lower carbon emissions and healthy lifestyle choices for residents.

We advocate for reprogramming the traffic lights on Wayne Gretzky Street to ensure they favor pedestrian crossing. This change would reduce wait times significantly and encourage a safer, more walkable community. By adjusting the sequence and timing of green lights for cars in coordination with pedestrian signals, we can ensure that people can cross safely and efficiently.

This simple yet impactful change would not only improve daily conditions for every resident and visitor in our area but would also set an example for pedestrian-friendly initiatives across our province.

Please stand with me in urging the city planners and traffic authorities to take immediate action to upgrade pedestrian crossings on Wayne Gretzky Street. Sign this petition to support safer and more equitable streets for all of us.
