Hyundai Recall for Consumer Justice

Hyundai Recall for Consumer Justice

The Issue

Hyundai Motors India Ltd. has been India's second largest automobile company which advertises of low service costs and good quality cars with decent fuel economy to draw interest of a lot of Indian middle class consumers who are looking to break out of the conventional Maruti ownership.

Has this faith of Indian consumers been fairly rewarded by HMIL?

One of the most common problems plaguing the Hyundai Cars is the faulty Electronic Power Steering (EPS). I faced this problem on my Eon for the first time about 3 years ago and was surprised to find that I was aboard a group of thousands of consumers, not just in India but across the world. I had at that time casually mentioned it on facebook in a frustrated attempt to catch Hyundai's attention https://www.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1019066871504404&id=179374318807001&ref=m_notif&notif_t=feed_comment knowing little that it was going to become a thread which continues to draw the grief of consumers even today while Hyundai apathetically asks for customer contact details perhaps via an auto responder with little intent to provide a customer centric solution.

I had at  that time borne the cost of this under par electronic part of HMIL because I was under shock of the accident that happened because of steering suddenly jamming and a truck ripping my  car's rear bumper while we had a narrow safe escape by the grace of  God. Hyundai just brushed the matter under the carpet without refunding the charges for the part, let alone compensation for damages or the mental agony.

Three years later and having done a little above 11000 kms since the last replacement, my EPS has gone bad yet again and the internet is even more populated with complaints of similar nature.

I know of my friends and family whose Hyundai cars have gobbled up money on replacement of EPS & ECU while Hyundai management smiles wide looking at their balance sheets and spiking spares sales due to these under par electronic fitments.

Hyundai in US has recalled cars for the very same issues (http://www.autoblog.com/2015/03/02/hyundai-recalls-205k-elantra-possible-power-steering-failure/) but are toying with public safety for ulterior motives in India.

There are Lemon Laws in American state that provide a remedy for purchasers of cars and other consumer goods in order to compensate for products that repeatedly fail to meet standards of quality and performance and the concept of deemed product life in Australia and NZ that protect consumer interest against inherent defects in products beyond their guarantee/ warranty period while I and many others in India are paying for unfair & unethical trade practices of HMIL.

This petition is an appeal to HMIL to service/ replace all cars which are doomed with these sub standard electronic parts like they did in US where the consumer protection law enforcement is much more stringent.

There are hundreds if not thousands of complaints scattered all over the net. Try running a Google search with strings "Hyundai EPS Problems" or "Hyundai EPS Recall" or just visit
