The Issue

Earth Day is observed annually on April 22, and this year’s theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” calls for tripling global clean electricity generation by 2030. For India, this is a timely reminder that energy security, clean air and economic resilience must advance together.

India imports nearly 85% of its crude oil requirement, spending vast sums every year on fuel imports while simultaneously grappling with pollution, rising power demand and climate-related challenges. The nation cannot afford to remain heavily dependent on costly and uncertain external energy sources.

Why a Mass Solar Mission Is Crucial

The continuing turmoil in West Asia once again highlights the risks of dependence on imported fossil fuels, volatile shipping routes and fluctuating global prices. Every international disruption places additional pressure on India’s economy.

In contrast, the primary input for solar energy — sunshine — is free, abundant and available across the country. Unlike thermal or gas-based power plants, solar energy does not rely on expensive daily fuel purchases. Expanding solar power is therefore not only an environmental priority, but also an economic and strategic opportunity.

India’s geographical location gives it immense solar potential. Harnessing this resource can strengthen energy security, lower import bills, reduce pollution and help meet future electricity demand sustainably. Yet solar energy still remains below its true potential in the national energy mix.

The Benefits of Solar Energy

A national mass solar mission can transform India into a global leader in renewable energy and set an example for developing nations worldwide.

A large-scale solar push can:

Create millions of jobs in manufacturing, installation, maintenance and allied sectors
Stimulate innovation and domestic technology development
Support MSMEs and local entrepreneurship
Reduce electricity costs over time
Improve air quality and public health
Lower greenhouse gas emissions
Strengthen long-term economic resilience
Widespread adoption of solar energy can significantly reduce pollution-related health risks and help secure a cleaner environment for future generations.

Our Appeal

We call upon the Government of India, energy policymakers and all relevant stakeholders to launch a comprehensive National Mass Solar Mission on the lines of the Swachh  Bharat Mission.

This mission should include:

Solar panels on all government and public utility buildings
Incentives for residential rooftop solar systems
Solarisation of schools, colleges, hospitals and industries
Solar streetlights and parking-lot canopies
Large solar parks on suitable land
Investment in research, storage and battery innovation
Support for EV charging and battery-swapping systems
International collaboration for best practices and technology transfer
Conclusion

The time to act is now. A National Mass Solar Mission aligns with global environmental goals and India’s energy security priorities.

We urge every citizen, institution and policymaker to support this initiative and demand immediate action. Sign this petition for a brighter, cleaner and more self-reliant energy future for India.

Together, we can make a decisive difference. Please sign today.
