With the uncertainty of the coronavirus lurking in nearby communities, I petition that public schools in Philadelphia should be closed immediately. Many living with a 60 mile radius of the city live in communities that have closed down for the next two weeks. Although closing schools would cause a massive disruption to normal routines and every day life for thousands of families, safety is most important! Administration, teachers, staff and students need to be home to protect themselves. We can wait no longer and must do the right thing!

There are many factors that cause blinders from seeing what’s most important such as the lack of devices, paper to provide review materials or the preparedness of families to deal with childcare. However, none of this will matter if there is an outbreak in the city.  Let’s give ourselves time to protect our students the best way we can and allow them to be home.

Some quick solutions can be put into place that can ensure learning will take place even if it would be on a limited basis. Safety is what is most important! It’s time to show inner-city students that they are just as important as students in surrounding communities.

Please don’t put us at risk any longer. We all need to be home with our families. This is an unprecedented time that we are living in and we must take immediate action!
