Fairness for All: A Call to Empower the Working Class

Fairness for All: A Call to Empower the Working Class
The Issue
We, the people, are concerned citizens who urge our government to act on the following:
1. Tax Threshold Reform: We call for a comprehensive review and reform of the current tax thresholds. The existing system disproportionately burdens the working class, while those with substantial wealth often benefit from loopholes and lower effective tax rates. We believe in a progressive tax system where those who have more contribute.
The personal allowance and basic rate bands have not changed significantly since the end of 2010/11, and many personal tax thresholds have been frozen in cash terms since April 2021. This has resulted in a fiscal drag, raising significant sums as the average effective tax rate rises more quickly over time. The personal allowance of income tax has been uprated in line with inflation from its 2021/22 value, increasing the personal allowance in 2024/25 from £12,570 to £15,260. In line with inflation, we propose that this adjustment should be the norm, not the exception.
2. Price Controls on Essential Services: We propose the implementation of price controls on large corporations, particularly those in the food, gas, and electricity sectors. These businesses have made billions in profits while many citizens struggle to afford basic necessities. For instance, companies like Shell have announced profits of 32.2 billion, and supermarkets have been increasing their prices way above inflation, with some products rising by almost 50% over the past 12 months. Stable prices for essential goods and services are a fundamental right, not a privilege.
3. Rent Control Legislation: We urge the introduction of rent control laws to prevent landlords from arbitrarily raising rents. A stable, affordable home is a basic human right and should be accessible to all, regardless of income.
4. Reallocate Military Spending: We note the significant funds allocated to Ukraine and the Middle East's military operations. We propose redirecting a portion of these funds towards domestic issues, such as the ones outlined above. We believe that investing in our citizens' well-being should be a priority.
We understand the complexities of these issues and the potential counterarguments. However, we firmly believe that these reforms can be implemented with careful planning and regulation without causing inflation or financial instability.
We kindly request your attention and action on these matters. By signing this petition, we express our desire for a fairer society where the working class is not unduly burdened, and everyone pays their fair share.
