Fair Trade, Fair World: Say No to Exports Tainted by Exploitation

The Issue

The United States is the biggest consumer of goods made in sweatshops. American citizens and companies create the demand for these cheap products that are made inhumanely. Every year, countless products made in sweatshops overseas find their way into American homes. These goods are often produced under horrible conditions, with workers including children being subjected to long hours, low pay, and unsafe environments. It is estimated that 152 million children worldwide are engaged in child labor (International Labour Organization 2020). Popular clothing companies like Nike and Shein capitalize off these sweatshops so they can lower their production costs and increase profit. As a consumer, I was once unaware of the hidden horrors behind the products I purchased. One night I was shopping for clothes and asked my friend why Shein clothes are so cheap. He directed me to look into their allegations of using slave labor and sweatshops to produce their products. From there i wondered why The U.S government allows the importation of these products
Most people falsely think that since shops are far away in different countries that the United States has no control over the issue. However a simple ban on the import and sale of products made in these conditions would force humane labor conditions. The import of these sweatshop made products not only supports these exploitative practices but also undermines fair trade and labor standards globally. Also eliminates jobs in The U.S. By stopping the import of such goods into the United States, we can take a stand against child and slave labor. This action will send a powerful message to manufacturers that Americans will not support businesses that exploit vulnerable individuals for profit. We urge our government officials to enact legislation prohibiting the importation of goods produced under such conditions. Stand with us against child and slave labor!
