The Issue

Millions of Americans borrowed money for an education believing it would provide a path to a better future. We became teachers, nurses, healthcare workers, first responders, tradespeople, business owners, public servants, parents, caregivers and workers in every profession.

We borrowed in good faith. We worked. We paid taxes. Many of us have made student loan payments for years—yet some borrowers now owe as much as, or even more than, they originally borrowed.

Meanwhile, federal student loan forgiveness and discharge programs have provided significant relief to certain groups of borrowers while millions of others have been left behind.

We are not asking for anyone else’s forgiveness to be taken away. We are asking for fairness for everyone.

This includes undergraduate borrowers, graduate and professional borrowers, Parent PLUS borrowers, older Americans approaching or already in retirement, and borrowers who have faithfully made payments for years.

Parents should not have to sacrifice their retirement because they borrowed money to help educate their children. Borrowers should not make payments for decades while interest prevents them from ever seeing the end of their debt.

Relief should not depend solely on someone’s profession, employer, school, age, or whether they happen to qualify for one particular government program.

We are asking Congress and the federal government to create meaningful, comprehensive student loan relief that includes ALL federal student loan borrowers—including Parent PLUS borrowers.

We ask our leaders to address excessive accumulated interest, give meaningful credit for payments already made, prevent balances from continually growing while required payments are being made, and establish a reasonable point at which repayment ends.

This is not about Democrats versus Republicans. It is not about one profession or generation being more deserving than another.

It is about fairness.

Education should create opportunity—not a lifetime of debt.

If our government has determined that student loan relief is appropriate for some Americans, then it is time to address the millions of borrowers who were left behind.

No profession should matter more than another. No generation should matter more than another. No parent borrower should be forgotten. No hardworking American should be left behind.
