Meanwhile, many civil servants, who are the backbone of our nation, struggle to survive on a meager $150 a month. This means that in a single month, one lawmaker earns what a civil servant would take years to amass. This is an indictment of our economic disparity and demands immediate action.

Liberia's capital, Monrovia, nestled in Montserrado County, is home to many who face the daily challenges of poverty — approximately 20% to 30% of its residents fight to make ends meet. However, outside the capital, rural areas such as River Cess and Gbarpolu suffer even more severely, with astounding poverty rates reaching as much as 70% to 80%. The gap between urban and rural communities is widening, exacerbating the challenges of our nation. Rural dwellers lack access to basic services and infrastructure, which further roots them in poverty, highlighting the need for equitable compensation and resource allocation.

The excessive compensation of our lawmakers is a reflection of a system that prioritizes wealth accumulation over public service. We ask for a re-evaluation of these financial allocations, aligning them with the country's economic realities. Lawmakers' salaries and benefits must reflect the true state of our economy and the sacrifices made by civil servants who work tirelessly across various sectors.
