Fair Overtime Distribution Based on Seniority in the Track Department

The Issue

We, the undersigned employees and supporters, are calling for a fair and transparent system for distributing overtime within the track department.

Currently, overtime opportunities are being assigned based on job classification rather than overall departmental seniority. This means that employees holding the Trackman classification are routinely given priority over Track Walkers and Laborers—even when those employees have significantly more years of service.

In practice, this creates an unfair system where:

Employees with decades of experience are passed over for overtime
Less senior employees receive priority solely due to classification
Long-standing principles of seniority and fairness are undermined
For example, a Laborer with 20 years of service or a Track Walker with 25 years of service can be bypassed for overtime in favor of a Trackman with only 2 years of service. This is not a reflection of experience, dedication, or capability—it is simply a flaw in how overtime is currently distributed.

This issue is especially concerning because the work performed during overtime often overlaps between classifications. Track Walkers and Laborers are fully capable and qualified to perform track work when needed. Despite this, they are excluded from opportunities they are able—and willing—to perform.

The current system negatively impacts:

Employee morale
Workplace fairness
Trust in management decisions
We are calling for a fair solution:

Overtime opportunities should be distributed based on overall departmental seniority, regardless of classification, provided the employee is qualified to perform the work.

This change would:

Recognize and reward long-term service
Ensure equal opportunity for all qualified employees
Restore fairness and transparency in overtime distribution
We urge management and decision-makers to take immediate action to correct this issue and implement a system that reflects fairness, respect, and accountability.

Sign this petition to support fair overtime distribution and equal treatment for all workers.
