Fair Opportunity for All: Mississippi Employment Reform

Fair Opportunity for All: Mississippi Employment Reform
The Issue
My name is Mark Stanford. I worked hard at my job, showing dedication every day. But when my past was discovered — not even through a formal background check — I was fired. One mistake from my past continued to define me, even though I had proven I could be responsible and trustworthy. This experience taught me how unfair background checks for ordinary jobs can ruin lives and families.
We need change, and it starts right here at home in Fulton, Mississippi. Thousands of Mississippians who have served their time are blocked from everyday jobs — fast food, warehouses, factories, offices — while background checks remain in place for childcare, healthcare, law enforcement, and other sensitive positions.
Here’s why this matters:
Nearly 37% of released individuals in Mississippi return to prison within three years. Stable jobs reduce recidivism.
Only 34–38% of people with a past conviction are employed four years after release, even though many are ready and willing to work.
A criminal record can reduce the chance of getting a job callback by 50%.
We call on the Mississippi Legislature to:
1. Protect safety where it matters most (childcare, healthcare, law enforcement, eldercare).
2. Remove unnecessary barriers for ordinary jobs.
3. Give Mississippians with a past a fair chance to rebuild their lives and contribute to their communities.
> “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has gone, the new has come!” – 2 Corinthians 5:17
It’s time to stop labeling people by their past and start building a stronger, more compassionate Mississippi — beginning right here at home in Fulton. Sign this petition to demand fair hiring for all.
