Fair Exams and Timely Feedback for UFV CIS/Computer Science students

The Issue

Summary for Petition:

UFV programming students face significant barriers due to restrictive exam policies that exclude Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) and delays in receiving feedback on graded work. Currently, our exams don’t allow IDEs, a standard tool in the programming industry essential for efficient and accurate coding. This policy emphasizes memorization over practical skill assessment, placing us at a disadvantage and misaligning our education with industry standards.

Concerns and Needed Changes:

Inconsistent and Unfair Assessments – With no standard requirement for IDE use, UFV exams vary greatly across courses, creating inconsistencies that impact fairness and skill measurement. Departments lack authority to enforce a standardized approach, leading to unfair testing conditions.

IDEs as Critical Tools for Real-World Readiness – IDEs offer features like syntax highlighting, error detection, and debugging, which are crucial in professional environments. Disallowing these tools in exams misrepresents programming assessments, putting focus on syntax recall over problem-solving and logic, the true core of programming work.

Misalignment with Coursework and Lack of Preparation – We’re allowed to use IDEs in labs and assignments but not during exams, creating a disconnect between our regular coursework and exam conditions. This inconsistency affects our ability to fully demonstrate competencies built throughout the term.

Delayed Grading and Lack of Timely Feedback – Feedback delays hinder our learning and preparation for major exams. Policies mandate timely grading, yet programming students often receive feedback only days before exams, limiting our ability to learn from previous assessments and adjust our studies.

Misconceptions about IDE Use and Academic Integrity – Concerns about academic misconduct are often cited as reasons to ban IDEs. However, secure exam environments can restrict IDEs to essential functions and prevent unauthorized extensions or internet access, ensuring fair and honest assessments.

Our Proposal: We’re calling on UFV to:

-Allow IDE use in programming exams, creating assessments that align with industry standards and accurately reflect the skills taught in our courses.

-Ensure timely return of graded work so students can review feedback and use it to improve before high-stakes exams.

-Empower departments to standardize exam conditions, establishing fair and consistent assessment practices.

By signing, you support UFV students in our call for fair, relevant, and consistent assessments that will prepare us for real-world success. Let’s work together to bring UFV’s academic practices in line with both industry standards and educational fairness.
