Fair Access to World Championships: Make USATF Fund Their MUT National Teams

Fair Access to World Championships: Make USATF Fund Their MUT National Teams
The Issue
Athletes selected to represent the United States Track and Field National Team for MUT (Mountain, Ultra, Trail) are currently required to pay for their own flights and transportation, lodging, meals and race entry fees. USATF has a primary sponsor of Nike who reportedly provides $19 million yearly. (https://www.runnersworld.com/news/a38389276/usatf-nike-financial-relationship-criminal-investigation/)
All athletes are required to wear Nike uniforms only for all media, all racing and all ceremonies associated with the event - any supplemental gear that is not Nike must be blacked out or taped over. Despite this contract and sponsorships from Toyota, Hershey, Garden of Life, and Next College Student Athlete, the financial responsibility to compete is placed on the athletes.
This financial burden has led to some athletes that have earned their spot on a USATF National Team to decline that spot and thus asks the question, “Are we sending the best athletes to represent USA or are we sending the athletes who can afford to go?” Our USATF National Teams for MUT should NOT be exclusive to those who can afford these costs. The athletes on these teams earned their spot through their discipline and sport.
NO athlete should have to pay to represent USATF and Nike on a MUT National Team.
We, the undersigned athletes and concerned individuals, write this petition to address the issue of inadequate compensation for MUT (mountain ultra, trail) athletes who represent the USATF at World Championships. We believe that these athletes, through their physical prowess, dedication, and time commitment, contribute significantly to the USATF brand and deserve fair compensation for their efforts.
MUT athletes, with their rigorous training regimens and commitment to excellence, bring honor and prestige to the United States when competing internationally. They showcase the values of discipline, perseverance, teamwork, and their performances inspire countless others to engage in athletics and live healthy lifestyles. Despite their contributions, these athletes have been burdened with covering their own expenses inclusive of travel, accommodations, meals, and other training and competition fees.
We, the petitioners, demand that USATF takes immediate action to rectify this situation and implement the following changes:
Comprehensive Compensation: Athletes should not have to pay to represent their country.
USATF should provide full compensation for MUT representing the United States at World Championships. This should cover travel expenses, including airfare or ground transportation, accommodation costs, meal allowances, and any other fees associated with training and competing at international events.
Transparent Policies: The athletes do not understand the current policies.
USATF should create and maintain transparent policies regarding athlete compensation for all disciplines, including MUT. These policies should be readily accessible to athletes, coaches, and the public, fostering trust and accountability within the organization.
We firmly believe that implementing these changes will strengthen the relationship between USATF and its MUT, leading to improved performances, greater participation, and enhanced representation on the global stage.
We urge the USATF Board of Directors to consider the implications of the current compensation practices on the well-being of our athletes and the reputation of our nation in the international athletics community. Let us work together to uphold the values of fairness, respect, and recognition for the hard work and dedication of our athletes.
Thank you for your attention to this critical matter. We look forward to a positive response and constructive dialogue on these issues.
