Failed LRT Service in Klang Valley - Heads must roll!

The Issue

I am a public commuter in the Klang Valley and on average, I spend 1 hour each time in the LRT when I need to be in office.

Since the uplift of Movement Control Order - there is an incremental rise in mobility amongst workers, students and general public.

Along with it, monthly affairs of LRT service breakdown and most popularly, the Kelana Jaya line. In September alone, there have been 3 times (3rd time in September).

  1. One needing to apologise for turning up late to office
  2. One needing to apologise for turning up late for classes in the morning
  3. One needing to apologise to their child/parent for returning home so late at nights, missing dinner times or homework coaching

I am tired of apologies for this is no fault of any of us. All we are asking is for a safe and reliable service.

The rise in bad service is not a result of influx in public commuters but rather poor planning and maintenance attitude perpetuated over the years. This has been happening since 2015 (Service down for 3 hours - 2015), 2016 (Rain and power trip caused delays - 2016). And who can forget the unfortunate LRT crash in 2021.

How long must we the commuters endure another one of the public poor service? The LRT line started in 1999 and its been 20+ years of service. Year after year, we hear of pledges to improve. There was the compensation/refund for late arrival in 2016 and the Minister of Transportation pledged for improvements by August in 2022 (Expected to improve by August)

We cannot continue to accept non accountability from those responsible from top to bottom of the public transportation chain - from those in charge of creating the policies to those funding the plans to those managing the service to those supplying the service.

We cannot accept empty promises and misplaced priorities.

Heads must roll and we demand -

  1. Change of guard in the relevant entities (e.g. Prasarana and Ministry of Transportation) for misplaced priorities, poor planning, total lack of accountability in driving a safe and reliable public transportation for Klang Valley commuters.
  2. An independent operations audit of Prasarana by the Public Accounts Committee. Names of people who have failed in their jobs must be made public.
  3. A clear plan and deadline for improvement in frequency and service. Failure to deliver, all commuters will be subjected to a reduction in income tax.

I am done apologising. Aren't you?

Updates 10th November 2022: RapidKL announced a slew of malfunctions that happened on the 5th November and on the 9th November, the Automatic Train Control system went down completely resulting in 16 stations closed for 7 days

The signs have already been on the wall since 2015.

From annual disruptions to monthly breakdowns and now to station shutdowns. Enough is enough!

Updates 12th December 2022: A new cabinet was installed on the 2nd December, coming post 15th General Elections. The new Transport Minister, Anthony Loke immediately got into action by taking the LRT KJ line during peak hour (New Minister spotted in LRT during rush hour) and in just 1 week later, Prasarana issued a statement on clear plans to upgrade the KJ line (Prasarana CEO shares plan on upgrade).

I am glad that the issue concerning many urban public transport users has finally taken centre stage in the new government. Let's hope we see concrete actions, accountability and changes for all Klang Vallet citizens!
