A Call to Regulate E-Bikes in DC

DC is sponsoring e-bikes in food delivery. Administered by the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), the E-Bike Food Delivery Pilot is designed to shift food deliveries from gas-powered vehicles to lithium battery e-bikes. https://sustainability.ddot.dc.gov/pages/17db709ba40e4197b959fe0fefe79fc2

The E-Bike Food Delivery Pilot provides participants with e-bikes and free battery charging. Battery swapping cabinets are available now at two locations – one near the Washington Area Bicyclist Association office at 1640 Columbia Rd NW in Adams Morgan; and a second at the Westminster Presbyterian Church at 400 I St SW in Southwest Waterfront.

A touted goal is to improve street safety. A laudable goal, but how are streets safer with more e-bikes when they are proving to be dangerous? (See The New York Times Magazine - Nov. 30, 2025) Without registration and tags, bikers cannot be held accountable. Without insurance, who will pay for damages? Without speed controls and age limits, how are we safer?

Biking is the only mode of transit in DC that is unregulated. How is it possible that city leaders can stake a claim to safer streets while putting us all in danger? First things first.
