Facebook: Stop Letting Scammers Target Local Communities through Abandoned Public Groups

The Issue

A few years ago, Facebook made a change allowing anyone to join public groups without admin approval. While this may have been intended to foster community growth, it has unfortunately opened the door for widespread scamming. What was meant to be a tool for connecting people has now become a vulnerability that threatens the safety of users and communities alike.

Thousands of older public groups, whose admins have left, been banned, or become inactive, have become prime targets for scammers. These scammers exploit the lack of oversight, posting fake lost dog or person posts, fake jobs, and fake services, which are later edited into identity theft scams after they are shared by trusting participants. The public nature of these groups allows the content to be widely shared by well-meaning users, further spreading the scams and causing real harm to unsuspecting individuals.

We ask that Facebook:

  • Reinstates the requirement for admin approval before joining any public group.
  • Implements stronger measures to identify and address inactive admins to prevent these groups from becoming easy targets for scams.

It is crucial that Facebook takes responsibility for the safety of its platform and the communities that rely on it.

These scams not only deceive vulnerable individuals but also erode trust within local communities. The unchecked spread of fraudulent content has serious implications for the safety and security of Facebook users. By allowing anyone to join public groups without any oversight, Facebook is inadvertently facilitating the spread of these scams, which can lead to financial loss, identity theft, and a breakdown in community trust.
