Facebook Is Enabling Anonymous Defamation & Harassment, It's Time for Accountability!
The Issue
FACEBOOK — YOU NEED TO HEAR THIS.
We are calling on Facebook/Meta to STOP allowing anonymous posting and assumed-name accounts to be used to target real people.
If you have ever had YOUR PHOTO posted in a Facebook group by someone hiding behind an assumed name, username, or anonymous profile, you know exactly how disturbing this can be.
Someone can take your photograph, post it into a group filled with strangers, talk about your personal life, make accusations about you, question your character, or encourage others to pile on — while hiding behind a name that may not even identify who they really are.
And the person being posted?
They are REAL.
They have a life.
They have a family.
They have children.
They have a career.
They have a reputation.
And they have emotions.
Finding out that your photograph is circulating among strangers while you don't even know who posted it can cause EXTREME STRESS, fear, embarrassment, humiliation, and emotional distress.
AND HERE'S THE BIGGER PROBLEM:
By allowing people to use assumed names and anonymous posting, Facebook is creating an environment that encourages and support bullying, defamation and harassment.
When people know they can hide behind anonymity, there is less accountability for what they say and do.
It becomes much easier to:
❌ Target someone
❌ Post someone's photograph
❌ Spread rumors
❌ Make accusations
❌ Harass an individual
❌ Encourage others to pile on
❌ Damage someone's reputation
❌ Hide behind an assumed identity
All while the person being targeted has to deal with the real-world consequences.
Groups like “Are We Dating the Same Guy?” and “Are We Dating the Same Girl?” may have legitimate purposes, including allowing people to share genuine safety concerns and experiences.
But legitimate safety concerns should not become a free pass for bullying, harassment, defamation, revenge, jealousy, personal vendettas, or potentially false accusations.
There needs to be accountability.
📢 FACEBOOK — WE ARE ASKING YOU TO DO BETTER.
We are asking Facebook/Meta to:
🔴 Eliminate anonymous posting when real individuals are being identified or photographed.
🔴 Stop allowing people to hide behind assumed names or fake identities when targeting other people.
🔴 Strengthen protections for individuals whose photographs and personal information are posted without their consent.
🔴 Create a meaningful process for people to challenge false, misleading, defamation, threatening, or harassing posts about them.
🔴 Hold people accountable for serious allegations they make about other human beings.
Free speech and personal safety can coexist.
Nobody is asking Facebook to silence legitimate conversations or prevent people from warning others about genuine safety concerns. To allow others to defame another person under an assumed name while not allowing that person a fair opportunity to defend themselves is unfair, irresponsible, and creates an environment where bullying, harassment, defamation and malicious attacks can thrive without accountability.
We're asking Facebook to stop giving people the ability to expose someone else's identity while concealing their own.
Because there is something fundamentally wrong with this:
One person gets to hide.
One person's face gets exposed.
One person gets to make the accusation.
And the other person has to live with the consequences.
That's not accountability.
That's an environment where harassment can thrive.
If you agree, SIGN THE PETITION. SHARE THIS POST. TAG FACEBOOK/META.
Let's make it clear:
FACEBOOK — IF YOU ALLOW PEOPLE TO HIDE BEHIND ANONYMOUS AND ASSUMED NAMES WHILE TARGETING REAL PEOPLE, YOU ARE HELPING CREATE AN ENVIRONMENT THAT ENABLES AND ENCOURAGES BULLYING, DEFAMATION AND HARASSMENT.
It's time for accountability.
Why is this important?
WHY THIS PETITION MATTERS
This matters because there are real people on the other side of every photograph, accusation, and post.
When Facebook allows someone to hide behind an assumed name or anonymous profile while posting another person's photograph and making statements about them, the person being targeted can be left feeling helpless, exposed, humiliated, angry, and extremely stressed.
Imagine discovering that your photograph has been posted in a group filled with strangers. People you don't know are discussing your personal life, making assumptions about you, or repeating accusations about you — and you have no idea who started it or why nad it could all be malicious lies.
You can't defend yourself against someone you can't identify.
That imbalance is the problem.
Facebook's anonymous features may have legitimate uses, but when they are used to target identifiable individuals, they can create an environment where people feel empowered to say things they might never say if they had to put their real name behind their words.
By allowing assumed names and anonymous posting in these situations, Facebook is creating an environment that can encourage and support bullying, harassment, defamation, humiliation, and personal attacks without accountability.
This isn't about taking away someone's right to speak.
It's about recognizing that the right to speak should not mean the right to hide while publicly targeting another person.
People deserve to be able to protect themselves from harassment. They deserve a meaningful opportunity to respond when they are publicly accused or misrepresented. And they deserve to know who is responsible when their photograph and reputation are being put in front of hundreds or thousands of strangers.
No one should have to wake up wondering where their picture has been posted, what strangers are saying about them, or who is behind it.
Facebook has the technology and resources to create stronger protections.
It's time to put accountability back into online conversations.
Because when someone's face is exposed, their reputation is at risk, and their life can be affected — the person making the accusations should not get to disappear behind “Anonymous.”
Real people. Real consequences. Real accountability.
That's why this petition matters.
