End Online Abuse and Discrimination

The Issue

The online racial abuse of Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho after the Euro 2020 final has been widely reported and condemned by the UK Government, the media and social media platforms.
Condemning this kind of behaviour will do absolutely nothing to prevent it from happening again in the future. Permanently banning accounts on social media will not prevent the same people from being able to sign up for another account to continue their campaign of hate. It does not matter if the media reports this kind of abuse. It will not stop whilst it is possible for people to hide behind an online veil of anonymity.
There must be measures in place to ensure that people cannot and will not take part in this kind of behaviour. If a person wishes to open a bank account they must provide evidence of identity before their account will be opened. Why do we not have similar measures in place for people who wish to open a social media account?
These measures would not prevent online abuse completely but it would make it much easier to hold people accountable and it would also mean that when a person is banned from a social media platform they will remain banned. There are currently little to no repercussions for this kind of behaviour. People will think twice before posting abusive content if they are forced to do so as themselves.

It is now time for social media platforms to act.
