Extend the SMART bus hours for Summer 2022

Extend the SMART bus hours for Summer 2022
The Issue
The Citizens of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo demand that municipal government extends current SMART Bus hours to be in line with the regular transit hours for the Summer of 2022 (effective immediately to September 2022). This is urgent, as the citizens of this region with limited mobility have little to no access to society in the winter months.
Currently the SMART bus operates until 7:30 PM on weekdays and until 5:30 on weekends. This is not in line with regular transit, or other communities, and has created a second class of citizens in the RMWB:
The 28-year-old man in a wheelchair who wants to go to a scheduled games night, or to a Giants game, but can’t because his transportation doesn’t operate at those times.
The mother in a wheelchair who couldn’t bring her newborn baby home from the hospital.
The Fort McMurray native who had a stroke while pregnant, suffering in isolation and trying to join a mom and tots group being denied SMART bus because they could take her but not her toddler.
We recognize there is a transit review currently in progress by the name of the Transit Master Plan and reiterate that accessible and EQUITABLE transit is not a suggestion, it is a right.
This includes:
- Looking at permanently extending the hours of the SMART bus
- An ON-DEMAND Ride Share Accessible Bus. So that the RMWB is more inclusive to the disabled community.
- Look at ways to install child seats in the busses, so that people with a disabilities can safely travel with their child(ren).
We, the undersigned, demand a more accessible community for all!
This is not a big ask, Please sign our petition!
Thank You!
