The Issue

I am one of many adults living in Wales who are waiting for an ADHD diagnosis. The process is long, emotional and frustrating. Waiting times can extend to five years or more as local options struggle with high demands and insufficient funding.

NHS England's 'Right to Choose' policy allows patients to select any provider of a service that they're entitled to via the NHS, potentially shortening wait times for critical support. In contrast, patients in Wales often feel forgotten, waiting anxiously for a system that doesn't prioritise them. Adopting a similar system for Wales could revolutionise how people with suspected ADHD access essential diagnostic services.

ADHD is not simply being a bit quirky and full of energy all the time. It significantly impacts one's life, affecting their personal relationships, job performance, self-perception, and mental health.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists claim that ADHD affects about 3 to 4 in every 100 adults. Given these figures, the impact of such prolonged waits for help is immeasurable.

We need the Welsh government to rectify the inequity in services available for patients waiting on ADHD diagnoses. It's crucial they adopt 'Right to Choose' or implement a similar mechanism to expedite the diagnosis timeline.

Please join me in demanding policy change. Sign this petition today to extend the 'Right to Choose' to patients awaiting an ADHD diagnosis in Wales.
