The Issue

My name is Kiera, and I am a young transgender individual deeply affected by the inadequate recognition of trans women in UK law. The recent decision of the UK Supreme Court to exclude trans women from their definition of women in the 2010 Equality Act has sparked outrage within myself and my community. It is simply unacceptable.

It is vital to understand that transgender women are women. Their decision to live as themselves should not mean exclusion from the reassurances the 2010 Equality Act provides for other women. The British Social Attitudes survey released in 2020 revealed that society's sentiments towards the transgender community have become increasingly positive, with 49% of the surveyed pool accepting trans identities as wholly valid (source: The Guardian). However, this societal recognition should also be echoed in our law.

According to Stonewall UK, about 1% of the UK population, equating to 650,000 individuals, are detected to be trans. These individuals, just like everyone else, deserve recognition, protection, and equality before the law. Excluding any number amongst these from the protection of our equality legislation is nothing short of unjust.

Our call is for the Supreme Court to seriously consider the ramifications of their decision and rectify it immediately. We believe in a society where everyone, trans and cisgender alike, are treated as equals, both in our daily lives and in the eyes of the law. It is 2022, and it is time the UK judiciary reflected societal progress in its legislation. Join us to fight for an inclusive, just, and fair society. Please sign this petition.
