Extend Thanksgiving and Christmas Breaks in Schools

The Issue

I work as a teacher and, like many educators across the country, have noticed that our students are struggling. They bear the brunt of a rigorous academic structure that hardly allows time for mental rejuvenation and for many, the chance to spend quality time with their families who live far away. This is my plea- extend the Thanksgiving break to a full week, and the Christmas break to two full weeks.

A multi-year study by the American Psychological Association shows that prolonged academic stress has highly unfavorable mental health implications for young learners (APA, 2014). Similarly, UNESCO agrees that holidays are fundamental for both academic performance and mental wellbeing of students (UNESCO, 2015). Extended breaks also enable families, especially those situated over long distances, to enjoy quality time together significantly boosting the emotional wellbeing of our pupils.

Our students are the future and we owe it to them to create a conducive academic environment that acknowledges and addresses their mental and emotional needs. Sign the petition today for longer breaks at Thanksgiving and Christmas, because our children deserve more than to just get by - they deserve to thrive.
