Extend Summer Vacation Duration to Support Student Internships and Mental Well-being
The Issue
Extend Summer Vacation Duration to Support Student Internships and Mental Well-Being
Students at our college are requesting the administration to reconsider the current summer vacation schedule, which provides only around two weeks of break.
Across many colleges and universities in Telangana, summer breaks commonly range from 40 days to 2 months. Institutions such as VNR Vignana Jyothi Institute of Engineering and Technology, CVR College of Engineering, Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology, Vidya Jyothi Institute of Technology, K L University, GITAM, and Mahindra University provide significantly longer summer breaks that allow students to pursue internships, certifications, research programs, and skill development opportunities.
What makes the situation more concerning is that our semester examinations are often completed earlier than those of many of these universities, yet our students still receive a much shorter vacation period. Despite finishing academics earlier, students are not being given enough time to make productive use of the summer.
These longer breaks in other colleges give students time to:
Pursue internships and industrial training
Build practical skills
Prepare for placements and higher studies
Participate in research programs, certifications, and hackathons
Rest and recover from academic burnout
However, the current short vacation period at our college creates several serious disadvantages for students.
1. Students Are Losing Internship Opportunities
Many companies offering internships require a minimum commitment of 1.5 to 2 months. Because our summer break is only two weeks long, students are forced to either:
Reject valuable internship opportunities, or
Miss classes and lose attendance after reopening
This places our students at a disadvantage compared to students from other institutions who are able to complete internships without academic penalties.
Internships are no longer optional additions to a resume — they are increasingly essential for placements, industry exposure, and career growth.
2. Practical Learning Matters
Students today are expected to graduate with real-world experience, not just theoretical knowledge. Internships help students:
Apply classroom concepts practically
Gain industry exposure
Improve communication and teamwork
Build technical and professional skills
Become more employable
A very short vacation period limits these opportunities significantly.
3. Student Burnout and Mental Well-Being
Engineering and degree programs are academically demanding. A meaningful summer break helps students:
Recover from continuous academic pressure
Spend time with family
Focus on personal development
Return to college more motivated and productive
A two-week break is often insufficient for proper rest and growth.
4. Alignment With Other Institutions
Students from other institutions are able to complete internships, training programs, and certifications during the summer without sacrificing attendance or academics. Our students deserve the same opportunity to compete fairly in placements and career development.
Our Request
We respectfully request the college administration to:
Extend the summer vacation duration to at least 6–8 weeks, OR
Provide official internship leave/attendance relaxation during the summer period
This would greatly benefit students academically, professionally, and personally while improving the institution’s placement readiness and industry reputation.
We are not requesting a reduction in academic quality. We are requesting a schedule that supports holistic student development and aligns with current industry expectations.
We hope the administration considers this request in the best interests of all students.
