The Issue

As an upcoming junior student taking numerous hard classes, I've found myself wishful for a period of time dedicated to studying and catching up on work. Alongside the academic pressures, I am also involved in extracurricular activities as an athlete. The hustle to balance education and sports often leaves me with little time for self-study- a plight shared by many junior students across the country. Strikingly, it was found that in 2018, 85% of high school students reported feeling overwhelmed by their homework, and most attributed the stress to lack of time (American Psychological Association). Likewise, The National Association for School Time points to the crucial role of adequate study periods in alleviating this issue.

It is pressing to note that our younger and senior schoolmates do benefit from a study hall period. Unfortunately, this privilege has been unfairly excluded for juniors, ostensibly in preparation for senior year burden. It is time to question if this practice truly prepares us or, in contrast, exacerbates academic stress and hurts own performance both in classes and sports. We, as junior students, need our voices to be heard on this matter of our study hall period. Every student, regardless of their grade, deserves an opportunity to excel in their education and personal interests without unnecessary stress or sacrifices. Therefore, we appeal to the educational authorities to extend study hall access for junior students. Your signature can make this transformation possible, paving the way for a more balanced and inclusive educational environment. Please sign this petition to extend study hall to the junior class.
