The Issue

Living in Vancouver, BC, the frustration of finding a way home after a night out is all too familiar. The entire SkyTrain/Canada Line system shuts down far too early, especially on weekends or at least Friday and Saturday nights. This leaves many of us stranded, impacting not only our ability to enjoy the vibrant nightlife that Vancouver has to offer but also the economic and social vitality of the city.

Consider this: when the bars close, the SkyTrain system is already winding down for the night. This premature shutdown poses a significant inconvenience and encourages risky behaviors such as intoxicated driving. Imagine the change if there were at least a few trains running later—allowing people to avoid potential hazards and truly enjoy what the city has to offer without worrying about how to get home safely.

Then there’s also night shift, hospitality & specialty services (such as hospital workers) that would immensely benefit from having cost effective ways of going to and from work.

It’s not just about convenience. Extending the SkyTrain operating hours, especially on weekends, could offer substantial economic benefits. Thriving nightspots, bars, restaurants, and events would retain more patrons for longer, boosting sales and enhancing customer satisfaction. This policy change would undoubtedly lead to an increase in revenue for these establishments, subsequently uplifting the local economy.

Moreover, the extended SkyTrain hours will help shake off the "no-fun city" stigma associated with Vancouver. Enabling people to stay out later would foster a more lively and active nightlife scene, drawing both residents and tourists to stay and enjoy the city after dark. This could be instrumental in changing perceptions of the city and making it a more attractive destination.

This is a change that many Vancouverites have called for over the years—and it’s high time that TransLink, the organization responsible for the SkyTrain, recognizes the need for these changes. With the consistent closure of the SkyTrain even before bars, venues, and other places conclude their activities, it’s evident that a restructuring of schedules could vastly improve the quality of life in the region.

Please join us in advocating for later SkyTrain hours. Let’s not only witness a transformation of our city's nightlife but support a safer, more dynamic, and economically prosperous environment for all. Your signature can make a difference. Sign this petition today to push for a better Vancouver for all.
