Petition updateChange the proposed Surrey LRT to SkyTrainSurrey City Council has cancelled light rail in favour of SkyTrain!
SkyTrain for Surrey
Nov 6, 2018

It's official: Surrey City Council has UNANIMOUSLY passed a motion instructing TransLink and all project partners to cancel the previously-planned Surrey-Newton-Guildford LRT. In response, TransLink has stopped work on the $1.65 billion LRT line, and funds and efforts can now be directed to building the rapid transit line we have all been asking for: a SKYTRAIN EXTENSION on Fraser Highway from Surrey to Langley!

Mayor Doug McCallum and 8 City Councillors – including one from the Surrey First party – all voted in favour of the motion to cancel LRT and build SkyTrain. With the mandate now supported by a unanimous vote at City Council, this extends our biggest victory to date and sets the stage for the City of Surrey to begin negotiations at the regional level to make SkyTrain connecting Surrey and Langley a reality.

*** OUR NEXT STEPS ***

The Regional Mayors' Council will be convening on THURS, NOV 15TH at 9:30 AM. This meeting will be open to the public and as with all Mayors' Council meetings, applications for delegation will be accepted. You are encouraged to attend!

The City of Surrey will need approval from the other Mayors in the region in order to put SkyTrain to Langley on the Phase 2 plan. The good news is, some Mayors in our region have stated that they would be supportive of a SkyTrain extension on Fraser Highway to Langley – including Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart, and Langley City Mayor Val van den Broek. The City of Vancouver's support, in particular, will bring most of the needed votes needed to over-ride and change the projects in the 10-Year-Vision Phase Two Plan, and formally make SkyTrain a reality.

This meeting will be our opportunity to remind the region's Mayors that the SkyTrain project that Surrey has now approved will bring far more travel time savings and economic benefits for the entire region, as cities will benefit from increased linkages between North-of-Fraser and South-of-Fraser cities. If you are available to attend this meeting, please let us know! We could use some numbers to show the Regional Mayors that the community backs SkyTrain and wants to see it built in Surrey and Langley to connect us to the region!
