Extend Oyster Card Zones to Include More Cities and Towns Near London
The Issue
Please sign this petition so we can show the demand for Oyster Card Inclusion and forward to the London Assembly and Local councils, without this, it is near enough impossible. SEE BELOW:
Over the last few years, towns such as Hemel Hempstead, Woking, Sevenoaks and High Wycombe have experienced significant population growth, indicative of the expanding commuter belt. This increase directly correlates with the heightened demand for efficient and cost-effective means of transport into London. With the burgeoning number of individuals and families making these towns their homes, the need for an integrated transport system has never been more pressing. In addition to this, towns a very similar distance away, such as Redhill, Brentwood, Grays, Swanley, Slough, Hertford and Knockholt fully support the oyster card system, despite not being as big of a commuter hub as some other towns listed previously.
Simultaneously, London has continued to evolve as a global hub for finance, culture, and innovation, resulting in an ever-increasing array of opportunities. The city's job market, cultural activities, and educational institutions perpetually draw a diverse workforce from adjacent towns and beyond. This continual growth necessitates improvements in the infrastructure to sustain and encourage the efficient movement of people into and out of the city.
Yet, despite the obvious benefits such connectivity would bring to thousands of commuters, the current situation starkly restricts accessibility and convenience for those residing in towns neglected by the Oyster card system. As these towns thrive and their populations swell, the need to optimize and extend the public transport network becomes more acute.
Our petition aims to trigger tangible change that aligns with environmental objectives and responds to the increasing growth in these areas. It is crucial for decision-makers to recognize the value of extending the use of the Oyster card system to encompass these growing commuter hotspots. The benefits of such a move would resonate not only in the daily lives of thousands but also in the broader environmental and economic landscape of the Greater London area.
The anomaly of our towns being excluded feels increasingly arbitrary, especially considering the reality that our lives are so closely intertwined with the events and evolutions occurring within Greater London. We share in the capital's fortunes and challenges, contribute to its economy, and engage with its cultural scene, yet we are denied the same level of access and convenience when it comes to transportation.
By enhancing the connectivity between these towns and London, we not only facilitate the daily commute of individuals but also support the growth of business and the sharing of resources, culture, and opportunities. This is a pivotal step toward a more integrated and inclusive transport system, empowering residents with improved accessibility and facilitating their participation in the city's vibrant opportunities.
I have included a list of stations in which i believe should be included in the oyster card zone; either zones 8/9.
- Kings Langley, Apsley, Hemel Hempstead (WCML)
- Esher, Hersham, Walton-on-Thames, Weybridge, Byfleet & New Haw, West Byfleet, Woking (SWRN)
- Kempton Park, Sunbury, Upper Halliford, Shepperton (SWRN)
- Ashford, Staines (SWRN)
- Dunton Green, Sevenoaks (SEN)
- St Albans City (MML)
- Brookmans Park, Welham Green, Hatfield, Welwyn Garden City (ECML)
This is not merely a petition for better commuting options but a call to action to reflect the dynamic growth and potential of these areas. Signing this petition signals to the County Councils (Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Surrey and Kent), Caroline Pidgeon at the London Assembly and the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, that there is a collective and urgent demand for transport reform that keeps pace with the evolving needs and aspirations of London's wider community.
Please sign this petition so we can show the demand for Oyster Card Inclusion and forward to the London Assembly and Local Councils, without this, it is near enough impossible.
