Extend lunch/recess times in the BSD

Extend lunch/recess times in the BSD
The Issue
Every parent wants to give their child a good childhood — one filled with laughter, play, and growth. But, in the Bellevue School District (BSD), children are being shortchanged on one of the simplest joys of childhood: extra time to play and relax during school hours.
Currently, our children are allotted only a short period for both lunch and recess. During this time, they must nourish their bodies and refresh their minds, but the reality is they are often rushed, barely managing to finish their meals or get engaged in play. Schools are meant to encourage growth and well-being, yet the current schedule does not align with the needs of our children.
Research confirms the significance of free play and relaxation time in a child's development. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, recess not only provides a necessary break but also enhances academic performance, fosters social skills, and encourages a lifetime of healthy physical activity. Furthermore, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advocates for at least 20 minutes of daily recess for students, highlighting its role in improving focus and reducing stress in children. Not to mention given the amounts of homework, students are unable to exercise and have enough fun after school, too.
Given these facts, it's evident that our current lunch and recess schedules don't sufficiently meet the recommendations by pediatrics experts. Extending these times would not only align with suggested national standards but also greatly benefit our children's health, happiness, and ability to learn.
We understand that there are logistical challenges involved in extending lunch and recess periods, but we believe the benefits far outweigh the difficulties. It requires collaborative planning, but it's doable. Schools can rearrange existing time allocations, implement staggered lunch schedules, or even reconsider non-essential activities during the school day to make room for more extensive breaks.
We call on the Bellevue School District to prioritize our children's well-being and education by extending lunch and recess times. This is not just about adding minutes; it's about enriching the lives of our students, ensuring they come home every day with smiles on their faces and the energy they need to thrive.
Sign this petition to support giving our children adequate time to eat, play, and rest. Together, we can make a difference in their everyday school experience.
