The Issue

For many Gonzaga University students, studying late into the night is a necessary part of achieving academic success. Yet, the current operating hours of the Gonzaga University Library impede our ability to access a quiet, structured environment when we need it most. In particular, night owls or students with daytime responsibilities find it challenging to maximize their study time within the restricted hours.

Extending the library hours to midnight every day, including weekends, would greatly benefit us. It’s widely recognized that students have different peak productivity times. According to the National Sleep Foundation, night owls constitute about 10% of the population, while a report from the American Psychological Association found that flexible study environments significantly improve cognitive performance and stress levels.

Moreover, numerous peer institutions already keep their libraries open until midnight or later, acknowledging the diverse schedules of their students. Universities like DePaul, Loyola, and others provide their students with more flexible library hours, aiding their academic success.

Opening the library late would also cater to students balancing jobs or extracurricular activities that make daytime studying impractical. In a study by the Association of College and Research Libraries, it was shown that extended library hours directly correlate with increased student satisfaction and success rates.

In light of these facts, we urge Gonzaga University to consider extending the library hours to midnight every day. By doing so, the university would demonstrate a commitment to accommodating diverse academic needs and furthering the success of its student body.
