Extend Dental Care Exemption for Mothers Affected by Hyperemesis Gravidarum

The Issue

As a woman who has suffered from the harrowing experience of Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG), I share this plea with you. This severe form of morning sickness happens to approximately 3.6% of women in pregnancy and can lead to significant oral health issues due to excessive vomiting. Unfortunately, many women, have suffered greatly following the condition, with some having even lost teeth due to decay from acid in vomit. The deeply disturbing reality is the profound impact this has on our physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing.

Currently, the maternity exemption certificate in the UK offers dental care for just one year following childbirth. This time frame, regrettably, is not enough for those of us who have been diagnosed or treated for Hyperemesis Gravidarum. The dental issues due to the condition are long-term, stretching far beyond the one-year limit, causing significant distress to mothers and impacting our ability to lead normal lives.

We are pushing for a change in this policy. The call to action here is the extension of the maternity exemption certificate for dental care by another year, specifically for women diagnosed with Hyperemesis Gravidarum. This policy change would allow affected women enough time to receive necessary and comprehensive dental care, restoring health, self-esteem, and ultimately the joy of motherhood that has for so long been shadowed by poor oral health.
