Currently, many public areas and transportation services restrict access for dogs, limiting their freedom of movement and our ability to enjoy these spaces with our beloved pets. Australia's approach often leans towards simple bans on dogs in public spaces rather than fostering a more dog-friendly social environment. However, implementing such stringent bans may only provide a short-term solution. The significant increase in pet ownership in Australia, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic, suggests that these measures may not be sustainable in the long run. The surge in pandemic-driven pet ownership has stabilized into a "new normal," making Australia one of the world's leaders in pet ownership, with dogs being the most common pet choice.

Urban planning strategies should prioritize inclusivity, making our cities more welcoming for people with their pets. Prioritizing safety is essential to ensure comfort for all, including non-pet owners. Implementing mandatory dog training and registration, as seen in many other countries, can help achieve this goal. Such laws have successfully expanded opportunities for dogs to access more public areas and transportation while reducing incidents of dog attacks and promoting education on dog safety. Prospective dog owners would be required to complete theoretical training on responsible dog ownership before obtaining a pet, followed by practical training sessions with their dogs. These measures are intended to reduce the prevalence of irresponsible pet owners and to curb illegal breeding activities.

Moreover, mandatory training initiatives can create job opportunities and decrease illegal dog breeding and sales.
