As a woman, I have no confidence that the Scottish Parliament’s Equalities, Human Rights and Civil Justice Committee will safeguard women’s rights in Scotland. This committee, which is supposed to uphold justice and equal rights for all, has consistently shown a lack of understanding and commitment to the unique challenges women face in our country. From failing to push for necessary legislative changes to protect women against gender-based violence, to overlooking issues like the gender pay gap and discrimination in the workplace, it is evident that their priorities do not align with the urgent needs of women today.

For years, women's advocacy groups and rights organizations in Scotland have been raising concerns about these very issues, highlighting statistical evidence of gender disparities and injustices. However, there has been little action taken by this committee to enforce policies that ensure real equality and protection for women. According to a recent report by the Scottish Government, women in Scotland earn on average 10% less than men for the same roles and tasks. Moreover, rates of domestic violence remain alarmingly high, with many cases going unreported due to insufficient support systems and protection measures.

The Equalities, Human Rights and Civil Justice Committee is tasked with a fundamental responsibility: to ensure that all citizens are treated equally and with respect. Yet, it seems to neglect half of the population in its agenda. Women deserve to have a say in the laws and policies that affect our lives directly and indirectly, and we need a committee that truly champions gender equality.

This petition calls for a radical overhaul of the committee’s priorities and practices, demanding that women's rights take center stage. We urge the Scottish Parliament to either reform this committee to better address women's rights issues or to establish a new task force with a dedicated focus on gender equality.
