Over a month has passed since we launched our petition, and yet, the USPTO has provided no response regarding the trademarks of iconic soccer clubs that helped shape the sport in America. My aim is to get a few hundred signatures, but this deliberate inaction from the USPTO makes it clear—they believe they can indefinitely park these trademarks without facing consequences. This is unacceptable.
We’re talking about clubs like the LA Aztecs, Chicago Sting, Washington Diplomats, Atlanta Chiefs—teams that were pioneers in the growth of soccer in the U.S. Yet, while franchise leagues like MLS and USL have had no problem resurrecting old NASL names, I’m being stonewalled at every turn. The USPTO's shelving of my trademarks is not just suspicious—it reeks of potential corruption, and I refuse to sit quietly while these crucial parts of soccer history are kept from the public.
I've now instructed my lawyer to file a claim under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) to uncover the truth behind these delays and search for any evidence of corruption or deliberate obstruction. If we find that the USPTO is unjustly holding up these trademarks for political or financial reasons, I will not hesitate to sue them for many millions in damages. And let’s be clear: if it comes to that, this legal battle will most likely be funded by the taxpayer. Why should the American public pay for the USPTO’s failures to process simple trademark applications in a fair and transparent manner?
Make no mistake—I’m not looking to hoard these trademarks for myself. My goal is to return these legendary clubs to the cities and operators who can manage them, build economic value, and bring soccer back to the people. The exclusive franchise model that has privatized soccer in this country is not the only way forward. We need an alternative that is community-focused, rooted in history, and free from corporate greed.
This is a fight for the soul of soccer in America, and I’m ready to take it as far as necessary. The USPTO must be held accountable, and I urge anyone who believes in the spirit of the game to stand with me. Sign the petition, demand transparency, and help bring these clubs back to the American people where they belong.
