What X/Twitter exposed this week is not just another scandal. It is the wide-shot, global version of the 2011 Canadian robocall fraud, and it reveals a straight line from that moment to today.

During one of Canada’s major election interference scandal, Pierre Poilievre worked for Stephen Harper as part of the Conservative government when Harper’s party was found to have used a voter-suppression scheme—misleading voters with fake calls and false polling locations. A judge concluded: fraud occurred, Conservative voter data was likely used, and the scheme attempted to prevent non-Conservative voters from casting ballots. That should have ended this behaviour forever. Instead… it evolved.

Today, many accounts posing as “Canada Proud,” “Alberta Proud,” and “real Canadian patriots” have been exposed by X’s new transparency tool. They’re not even in Canada. They are operating from Russia, Nigeria, India, Thailand, Eastern Europe, and South Asia. These accounts have been attacking Canadians, shaping online debate, and pushing partisan narratives while pretending to be ordinary local voters. This isn’t patriotism. It’s a foreign political operation hiding behind Canadian flags.

Here’s the crucial link: in 2011, Pierre Poilievre worked under Stephen Harper during the robocall scandal. In 2025, Poilievre is now hoping to lead the country. And Stephen Harper is currently the leader of the International Democrat Union (IDU)—the global political alliance coordinating strategy across right-wing parties in dozens of countries. So while Poilievre seeks power in Canada, Harper is leading the global machine that amplifies the exact same kind of foreign interference just exposed. This is not coincidence. This is coordination.

What we’re seeing now is the international version of the robocall scandal. Instead of fake phone calls sending Canadians to the wrong polling station, we now have: fake “patriot” accounts pretending to be Canadian; foreign political operatives shaping our discourse; coordinated attacks on journalists, critics, and anyone asking questions; disinformation flooding every conversation. It’s exactly like the scene in Princess Mononoke, where villagers hide inside animal skins to fool a forest spirit whose vision is blurred. Foreign actors are wearing the “skins” of Canadians to distort ours.

This is a direct attack on Canadian democracy. And yet the loudest “patriots” online refuse to denounce it—because the bots, trolls, and foreign operators can’t. They would expose themselves.

This is why I created my petition long before this scandal broke. What’s happening now proves the danger is real. Canadians are being tricked, targeted, and drowned out by foreign interference pretending to be our neighbours and our fellow voters. This must end.
