My name is Louise, and I am a powered wheelchair user who loves visiting the beautiful beaches in the Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole (BCP) area. However, enjoying these beaches is not as simple as it should be. Currently, there are only two wheelchair-accessible mats that allow individuals to reach the sand from the promenade, and they are only available from May to September. To add to the challenge, these mats are placed only on sections of the beach where dogs are not allowed, effectively excluding wheelchair users who are pet owners from a complete beach experience.

This limited accessibility not only affects me personally but also countless others who wish to relish the seaside just like everyone else. Beaches should be inclusive places where everyone, regardless of mobility challenges, has the opportunity to enjoy the sun, sea, and sand. Wheelchair accessibility shouldn't be a seasonal privilege, but a year-round necessity.

I am calling on the local councils to take actionable steps towards improving accessibility for all beachgoers in the BCP area. Specifically, I propose the introduction of additional wheelchair-friendly beach mats throughout the area, covering both dog-friendly and other sections of the beaches, and ensuring that these mats are available all year. Statistics show that improved accessibility promotes greater inclusion and participation in community activities, which is essential for the wellbeing of those with mobility challenges. Many other coastal towns have successfully adapted their beach access to cater to wheelchair users, and there is no reason BCP cannot lead by example.

This change not only enriches the lives of wheelchair users and their families but also makes the BCP area a more attractive and welcoming tourist destination. Beach accessibility allows everyone, irrespective of physical limitations, to enjoy the natural beauty and recreational opportunities the area offers.
