Life with a chronic illness or disability often feels like fighting an uphill battle where the world isn’t built for us. Every day, I wake up in pain, unsure if my body will allow me to pursue the dreams I've been working towards. I always wanted to be a psychologist, yet the physical demands of education and work feel insurmountable with my condition. This struggle isn’t unique to me. Many of my friends share the same concerns, asking, "What if we don’t get a chance to make something of ourselves?"

Our society, particularly in the United States, pressures us to work to the bone, often ignoring the unique challenges disabled individuals face. We’re told to be grateful, to turn our adversity into strength, yet the reality is different. The truth is, while we strive to find joy in the little things, like throwing a ball with my dog, we often lack the support needed to navigate life with dignity and independence.

Financial resources for those of us who can’t work regularly are scarce, and finding accommodating employment is even harder. I can’t possibly afford the cost of living without substantial help—cooking, driving, shopping, all these simple acts require assistance that’s not always available or affordable. Despite having some family support, many of us are forced to compromise our mental health to survive. We’re not "mooching," we’re simply trying to live.

What we need is a fundamental change in how support services are structured for disabled individuals. Expanding nationwide support, including living assistance, accessible education, and job accommodations, is crucial. These services would empower us, not to be solely independent, but to be part of the society that often overlooks us.
