As an advocate for food insecurity, I am calling for the expansion of school food programs across Ontario. We can make a difference in the lives of students and their families by ensuring access to free, nutritious meals at school.

Providing free school lunches or snacks leads to financial relief for families, reducing their monthly grocery bills. This saves money that can be redirected toward other needs such as rent, gas, and utilities, improving the overall quality of life for families in our neighbourhoods.

Also, having access to nutritious meals at school is important for students' academic success.  Kids can't concentrate in class on an empty stomach. By expanding school meal programs, we remove the embarrassment for children who cannot afford cafeteria food, making it fair so every student can thrive without the stress of hunger.

• It allows direct relief for families: Free school lunches or snacks lower a household's monthly grocery bill, freeing up some money for other necessities such as rent, gas, and utilities.
• Helps improve student focus: Kids can’t focus in class if they are hungry or worried about food. Universal school meals make sure every student has what they need without feeling embarrassed or singled out around their friends. Many kids cannot afford cafeteria food, and on days when they do not have lunch, schools need to have something available.
• Prevents Broader Problems: When basic needs are too expensive, it could lead to serious mental issues such as extreme stress, mental health struggles, and also poor physical health for skipping meals or staying home all day.
• It Fulfills the Government's Responsibilities: Citizens have a right to basic safety and stability. When prices rise faster than what people can earn, the government has a duty to step in with policies and support programs that keep the society fair.
