The Issue

Kool April Nites has been an important tradition in Redding for many years, celebrating classic cars and bringing the community together. We are incredibly grateful for the volunteers and organizers who make this event possible every year.

We are respectfully proposing that Kool April Nites consider adding a new optional class for 1980–1985 vehicles, possibly called “Early Modern Classics,” “1980s Heritage Class,” or “Next Generation Classics.”

Vehicles from 1980–1985 are now over 40 years old and represent an important and historic era in automotive history. This period includes the early days of fuel injection, the rise of European sport sedans, Japanese sports cars, American performance vehicles, and many cars that are now becoming highly collectible and historically significant.

Examples of vehicles from this era include:

BMW E30
Fox Body Mustang
Porsche 944
Toyota Supra
Nissan 300ZX
Chevrolet Corvette (C4)
Buick Grand National
Volkswagen GTI
Toyota AE86
Datsun/Nissan 280ZX
And many more

This proposal is NOT to change the current 1979-and-earlier tradition.

Instead, this is a proposal to add a new optional class to help the event continue to grow while preserving its history and tradition.

Adding a small 1980–1985 class could:

Bring more participants and spectators
Bring younger generations into the classic car community
Increase attendance for downtown Redding businesses
Help preserve an important era of automotive history
Help ensure Kool April Nites continues to grow and succeed for years to come

Many owners of 1980–1985 vehicles would love the opportunity to participate in Kool April Nites and be part of this long-standing Redding tradition.

We respectfully ask the Kool April Nites Board of Directors to consider adding a new optional class for 1980–1985 vehicles in future events.

Thank you for supporting the Redding car community and the future of automotive history.
