Expand NHS outreach for over 70s mammograms

Expand NHS outreach for over 70s mammograms
The Issue
I'm 79 years old and have lived a life defined by resilience, facing and overcoming breast cancer 23 years ago. However, I find myself appalled by a critical gap in our NHS services. Once one turns 70, the NHS no longer sends invitations for mammogram screenings. While it is possible to receive mammograms every three years after 70 by self-referral, the onus is entirely on the individual to know and act upon this possibility. Many in this vulnerable age bracket remain in the dark, unaware that they can and should request these vital screenings.
Just this year, by taking the initiative to self-refer, I uncovered a cancer that required immediate surgical intervention—a terrifying prospect considering I hadn't felt any lumps. It makes me shudder to think what my outcome might have been had I not pursued this lifesaving check.
The facts are compelling: early detection of breast cancer significantly boosts survival rates, especially among older adults, a demographic projected to grow substantially in the coming decades. Ensuring this group has the knowledge and ability to access necessary healthcare screening should be a priority.
I propose a campaign to fundamentally change the way we approach mammogram screenings for women over 70. Instead of leaving them to navigate the complex healthcare system alone, let us establish clear communication channels to ensure they are informed about their rights to self-refer.
By implementing targeted outreach programs, such as informational mailers, community health talks, and leveraging technology and social media platforms, we can engage this aging population effectively. This small step can vastly improve awareness and potentially save countless lives by catching cancer early.
Moreover, healthcare providers must be encouraged to have proactive discussions with their senior patients about the importance of continuous health screenings.
Join me in urging NHS policymakers to amplify their outreach and support for women over 70. Please sign this petition to remind the NHS that age should not diminish our access to essential, potentially lifesaving, healthcare services. Let's ensure no one in our community is left without the care they deserve.
