Too many young people are being priced out of the Hudson Valley and the Capital Region, or forced to leave in search of opportunity, affordability, and reliable transportation. Children, upon graduating from high school or college, increasingly face a painful choice: remain in the communities they love with limited mobility and rising costs, or leave altogether to pursue economic opportunity elsewhere.

If New York wants the next generation to build their futures here, to live, work, raise families, and invest in our communities, we must modernize how our regions are connected. One proposal now gaining renewed attention is the expansion of Metro-North Railroad service to Albany, creating more affordable, reliable, and accessible transportation options that link the Capital Region, the Hudson Valley, and New York City.

The Capital Region, the Hudson Valley, and New York City need stronger, more reliable regional connectivity. While Amtrak provides important service along the corridor, riders often face limited scheduling options, inconsistent reliability, and fare prices that can become unaffordable for regular commuters, students, families, and working New Yorkers. Expanding Metro-North Railroad service to Albany would create more dependable and affordable transportation options while strengthening economic opportunity, improving mobility, supporting tourism, and helping communities throughout the Hudson Line corridor remain connected and competitive.

This proposal is not about replacing existing rail options. It is about giving residents, workers, students, families, and businesses more reliable, accessible, and affordable ways to move throughout New York State.

Right now:

• Many Hudson Valley and Capital Region residents face limited and expensive rail options, meaning most trains are sold out.
• Existing fares can fluctuate dramatically, becoming unaffordable for regular travelers and working families.
• Transportation barriers make it harder for communities to grow economically and remain connected.
• New Yorkers deserve modern rail infrastructure that reflects how people live and work today.

Expanded Metro-North service would:

This is bigger than one train line.

It is about whether New York is willing to invest in a future where mobility, affordability, economic opportunity, and community connectivity go hand in hand.
