Expand lunch options at River Islands High School
The Issue
Every day, our children return home from River Islands High School feeling hungry and unsatisfied. As parents and students, we are deeply concerned about the limited lunch options available at RIHS, a place where they spend a significant portion of their day. Currently, the school offers only one daily entrée choice along with a vegetarian alternative. This limited selection does not cater to the diverse dietary needs and preferences of a large student body. Moreover, the restrictions on students leaving campus or having food delivered exacerbate the problem.
River Islands High School, part of the Banta Unified School District, should be a nurturing environment where students can focus on learning and not on their empty stomachs. Nutrition plays a critical role in a student's ability to concentrate, retain information, and perform academically. According to the California Department of Education, the state encourages schools to provide diverse and balanced meal options to ensure students receive adequate nutrition.
We urge the district to align with this guidance and undertake meaningful steps to expand the lunch offerings at RIHS. Specifically, we are calling for the implementation of multiple lunch stations that provide a variety of daily meal choices, similar to what is available in other California high schools. This should include culturally diverse meals, more fresh produce, and healthy snacks.
With a growing student population, the need for varied and nutritional meals is more pressing than ever. Many neighboring high schools in San Joaquin County and surrounding districts offer students a wider variety of lunch choices than are currently available at River Islands High School. We respectfully ask Banta Unified School District to explore expanding RIHS's lunch program by offering additional daily entrée choices, more menu variety, and multiple serving options that better meet the needs of high school students.
By providing RIHS students with more food options, we can promote their well-being and academic success. It is crucial for the Banta Unified School District to prioritize this issue and take rapid action to rectify it.
Please join us in urging the Banta Unified School District to expand lunch options at River Islands High School. Sign this petition and help us ensure that our children have access to the nutritious meals they deserve.
